The Inspiring Journey of Gram Chetna Kendra
Gram Chetna Kendra (GCK), meaning Village Awareness Center, was born in 1986 out of a vision shared by a group of socially conscious individuals under the leadership of Mr. Om Prakash Sharma. With deep awareness of the challenges faced by Rajasthan’s rural poor, these pioneers pooled their unique talents, skills, and experiences to address the pressing issues of poverty, inequality, and lack of access to basic services. In 1989, their efforts took formal shape when GCK was registered as a voluntary, non-governmental organization under the Societies Registration Act, operating from its campus in the heart of Khedi Milak village.
Where It All Began
Situated 55 km from Jaipur, in the Sambhar Block of Jaipur District, Khedi Milak was a region largely neglected by mainstream development efforts. The area’s population faced immense economic hardships, compounded by limited access to education, healthcare, and government services. Traditional beliefs and unequal power structures further entrenched these challenges, creating a cycle of poverty and exclusion.
Recognizing these struggles, the founders of GCK committed themselves to empowering the rural population. Their philosophy centered on the belief that the potential for lasting change lies within individuals themselves. GCK took on the role of a facilitator, guiding communities to harness their own capabilities and transform their realities.
Evolving for Greater Impact
Over the years, GCK expanded its scope, drawing on diverse funding and support to implement a wide range of development initiatives. While its early projects focused on meeting basic needs, the organization soon evolved to emphasize capacity building and human resource development. By equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to realize their potential, GCK ensured that development would be both sustainable and in harmony with the natural environment.
Today, GCK’s campus serves as a vibrant hub for service and awareness. It promotes community organizations, public education to combat prejudices, advocacy for equitable policies, and training programs aimed at fostering personal and community growth. The organization’s holistic approach enables individuals to integrate into mainstream society and actively contribute to their own development.
A Legacy of Empowerment
From its humble beginnings in one village, GCK’s reach has grown to cover 791 villages across 11 districts in Rajasthan. Through innovative projects and a steadfast commitment to its mission, the organization has touched countless lives, fostering dignity, equality, and opportunity for all. Whether through advocacy, education, or skill-building, GCK remains a shining beacon of hope and empowerment in Rajasthan’s rural heartlands.
